SUMMARY:Seminar: Beyond Moore’s Law: The Role of Hybrid Quantum-Classical Computing\, Vincenzo De Maio
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: With the increasing computational requirements of modern applications\, the limitations of classical hardware\, as theorized by Moore's law\, are becoming increasingly prevalent. Therefore\, the computing landscape is shifting toward novel architectures that extend beyond Moore’s Law. Among these\, hybrid quantum-classical systems have emerged as a promising approach to further scale current capabilities of HPC systems. This talk explores the interplay between quantum and HPC\, examining how quantum processors can be leveraged alongside classical HPC architectures to enhance computational efficiency of complex tasks\, such as optimization\, simulation\, and machine learning. We will discuss current advancements in hybrid quantum-classical systems\, such as variational algorithms\, and the most prominent frameworks to enable hybrid quantum-classical computation. Afterward\, we will provide an overview of the research in this area\, including the experience with the HPQC project and some recent research achievements. Finally\, we will provide an outlook on the role of hybrid quantum-classical systems in the post-Moore era and the open research challenges. \n\n\n\nBio: Vincenzo De Maio is a Postdoctoral Researcher at TU Wien\, with special focus on Integration of Quantum Computers in HPC\, Quantum Machine Learning\, and Quantum Optimization\, Edge/Cloud Computing\, Sustainable Computing and Distributed Systems. From June 1st 2025\, he will join the University of Leicester as Lecturer in Distributed Systems. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Innsbruck in November 2016\, with a thesis on modelling energy consumption of Cloud data centers\, particularly focusing on Virtual Machine Migration. Since 2017\, he is working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Information Systems Engineering of the TU Wien\, in the HPC research group\, whose leader is Univ. Prof. Dr. Ivona Brandic. Since 2022\, he also collaborates with the Department of Experimental Physics of the University of Innsbruck and prof. Thomas Monz as CO-PI of the FFG Leitprojekt HPQC project\, whose goal is the integration of quantum hardware in HPC systems. Since 2023\, he is the main lecturer for “Hybrid Quantum-Classical Systems”\, for the master degree in computer Science in TU Wien\, and guest lecturer for the lecture “Quantum Computing\, Complexity Theory\, and Algorithmics”. He is a member of the TU Wien Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (CAIML)\, where he contributes to the special interest group in quantum physics\, and of the Italian non-profit association Informatici Senza Frontiere (https://www.informaticisenzafrontiere.org/). More information on his scientific production are available on his website https://vindem.github.io/
